Are you feeling nervous about being prepared for your upcoming family photo shoot? You're not alone! Many of the families I work with feel a mix of excitement and anxiety before the big day. After all, you've invested in this gift for you and your family and want everything to go smoothly. But fear not. I've got you covered. In this guide, I'll share tips to help you settle into the moment and enjoy your photo shoot!
1. Remember your "Why"
Remember why you're doing this in the first place – to capture precious memories with the people you love. These photos will be cherished for years, and the memories made during the shoot are as important as the final images.
It's normal to feel nervous before a family photo shoot, especially if it's your first one. Together, we will turn those nerves into beautiful, lasting memories.
2. Let your kids be kids
I have three kids under 10. I GET IT. I know how hard it is to get all three of them wearing shoes and into the minivan, let alone cooperating for an entire photoshoot. The good news is they don't need to. I will get the natural shots of them laughing or staring into your eyes, even if they have no idea it's happening.
No one needs to stand at attention and stare into the camera with a fake smile. You aren't hiring a photographer for that kind of photo.
Your photos look best when you engage with each other as a family. If your little one becomes obsessed with a stick they found on the ground, we'll make it cute.
If they're having a meltdown, we'll figure it out. Please do not worry about your kids' behavior at the shoot. I promise you I'm not.
3. I will tell you what to do!
Not in a bossy way, of course! There is always that awkward moment when you step in front of the lens. You forget how to smile, realize there is no, and has never been, a normal place to put your arms, and the word relax sounds familiar but has literally no more meaning than the gibberish coming from the Minions movie playing in your Pacifica on the way to the session. That is normal, and I feel that way in front of the camera, too.
We will get great photos if I need to pose everyone in your tribe for the whole shoot or if your squad is super high energy and free-spirited, and we barely do any posed shots. This is why you hire a professional. I'll provide the exact amount of guidance and presence needed to ensure we get incredible photos.
4. Dress comfortably and coordinate outfits
Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Coordinating colors and styles can make your family photos look cohesive. However, remember to be yourself! Your family's unique personalities and styles should shine through. Neutral colors with minimal patterns work incredibly for coordinating and for outdoor photoshoots.
5. Leave plenty of time to get ready and arrive on time
I've developed a mathematical formula for getting places on time with my kids:
How long I think it will take X 3 = How long it actually takes.
This sounds like a joke, but I actually do this math in my head when a punctual arrival is required. Nothing amps up the stress and anxiety more than running late, so when you book your shoot, make sure you can leave a lot of time to get ready and arrive at the location 10-15 minutes before your start time. This will give you time to handle those unexpected bathroom stops, last-minute existential crisis moments, and as you read earlier, my personal favorite, the inexplicable amount of time it takes kids to get their shoes on. You know how it goes.
6. Expect it to be perfectly imperfect
Some of the most classic and heartwarming family photos capture candid moments and genuine emotions. Let your planning stop at arriving on time and wearing clothes you feel beautiful in. Part of what makes a photo shoot fun are the unexpected moments, unplanned interactions, and the real-life stuff. So, embrace imperfections, laugh, and let your true selves shine.
