What goes into a family photoshoot to justify the price tag? The answer is important, and so much work goes into making it great, but I don't think what goes into the shoot is what is most important to you.
What is important is what you get out of it, not what I put into it. Here is where the value of family photography comes from.
These photos will be in your favorites folder on your phone and on your friend's refrigerators around the Holidays. These photos will be in the slideshow you put together for your son or daughter's rehearsal dinner and on your living room walls.
They'll be in the moving box that gets buckled into your backseat marked "fragile" (Must be Italian). They'll be on your "What would I grab if my house was on fire" list.
These will be the photos you look back at with tears in your eyes when your youngest goes off to college, and you miss them, and you can't believe they grew up so fast.
Your grandkids will look at these photos and laugh at what grandma and grandpa looked like way back in the 2020s, or maybe they will mistake a picture of their parents for one of themselves.
We're all busy; everything is expensive, and every penny counts. With three of my own, I truly understand that. I've also probably spent the equivalent of a full family photoshoot in a couple of trips to Target, with nothing really to show for it a month or even a few weeks later, let alone 20 years from now.
What other gift can you buy yourself and your family that will last for generations? Even next year, when you look back at your photos, you won't be thinking about the money; you'll think about how happy you are that you had them done because your kids already look so much older.
If capturing family memories is important to you and you're wondering, "Can I afford to do this?" maybe the real question is, "Can you afford not to?"
